Sunderland are still a considerable distance away from agreeing a new contract with star striker Ross Stewart, according to The Sun.

The same report states that the Black Cats are currently prepared to offer terms of roughly £10,000 per week to keep him at the Stadium of Light – an offer that would almost triple his current salary.

However, the Scotsman currently has a considerable amount of power over his future with his deal effectively expiring in 2024 when considering the one-year option Tony Mowbray’s side have at their disposal.

Lee Burge?

Yes No

And this report states that the Wearside outfit may have to take serious offers under consideration this month with the Black Cats still some way from agreeing a new contract with their talisman.

Scoring nine goals and recording three assists in 11 league appearances this season, he has been one of the best strikers in the Championship this term despite only taking the step up to this level at the start of this term.

Unsurprisingly then, he isn’t short of interest with Brentford, Blackburn Rovers, Crystal Palace, Middlesbrough, Scottish Premiership side Rangers and Stoke City all thought to be keen on signing him.

The Verdict:

If they want to generate as much money for the forward as possible, the Black Cats would be well served cashing in on him this month because he’s returned to form at the right time.

However, clubs will be wary about his contract situation and this is why they may not get any offers at all for him, something that could actually benefit the Wearside outfit.

If he isn’t the subject of bids in January, that may allow the 26-year-old to focus on his football, maximising his chances of remaining in top form from now until the end of the campaign.

That won’t just be beneficial for the player – but also the club in their potential quest to win back-to-back promotions – with the Black Cats currently sitting in the play-off zone.

From the player’s perspective, he will surely want to move up a level if he did move on in January and this is why it would be difficult to see the likes of Blackburn, Boro and Stoke winning the race for him.

That could boost others in their potential quest to recruit him this winter.
