Celta Vigo gave their fans arguably the best present they could have hoped for this Christmas, with news that captain and now legendary forward Iago Aspas is staying at the club.
The 37-year-old was out of contract next summer, but has put pen to paper on a new deal that extends his stay until the end of 2026. Aspas has achieved Messiah-like status for the fans at Balaidos, who have seen him take part in their European runs, and also save them from multiple relegations in extremis.
Aspas remains an important player for Claudio Giraldez, playing 16 of their 17 Liga games this season. Of those appearances, 13 of them have been starts, and he has 6 goals and 3 assists in them. Despite his age, he still retains the midas touch in front of goal, and often the hub of creation for the Galicians. Giraldez has made Celta less reliant on Aspas though, as evidenced by the fact that he was on the bench against Real Sociedad, and Celta still managed to win.
