the european chapter of our 20/21 season may be finished, but we are still waiting for the main act to be written in another. we have a chance to see off another title-race rival as we face sturm graz.

We have played six matches of Austrian league football in total in 2021, and we have won all six. That we want to continue this run speaks for itself, and memories of our first meeting with Sturm this season only serve to sharpen our determination. The Graz side were 3-1 winners at the Red Bull Arena, in a victory that announced their arrival in the title race. Soon they saw how quickly things can change in football, however, as they are now 12 points behind us. The points are to be halved soon before the final 10 matches of the season, but a 15-point lead would still be pretty much insurmountable.

Sturm have lost their last two matches, but they have the advantage of not having played in midweek. We had Max Wöber back on the pitch for the second half in Villarreal, and he seems to be raring to go ahead of our two away matches against Sturm. The match will not take place in Graz, however, as the pitch at the as Merkur Arena is currently deemed unplayable. The match will take place at the Wörthersee Stadium in Klagnefurt, as will Wednesday's cup match.

Jesse Marsch on …

the match against Sturm:

We saw in the first match of the season against Sturm how dangerous and efficient they can be. That should be all the warning we need. Sturm are also under a certain amount of pressure though, as a defeat would see them lose sight of the top pack a little.

… the run of away matches:

It's not entirely ideal, of course, but we have to play three away matches in a row. That means the recovery phases are even shorter, as we always have to travel to a match a day earlier. That's all the more reason to use these short phases well to recover, though. We have to put our exit from the Europa League out of our minds now. That makes it good that we have important matches and new challenges ahead of us straight away, which we have to concentrate on.

… the meeting with SK Sturm on Sunday:

Sturm have lost a little ground after an excellent period before the winter break. They are still a good team and have the advantage that they go into the match fresh and well rested. It's definitely positive that we can play against Sturm on a pitch that is suitable for the Bundesliga. We want to gain revenge for our home defeat in the autumn.

a double header in the league and cup:

It's strange that we will again face a team twice in the space of a few days - just as we had in the last round of the cup. It's a bit like being in Europe. The only difference is we can't concern ourselves at all about the cup match yet, as first we have three important league points to play for on Sunday.
