The Seagulls travel to St Andrew’s for their opening tie in this season’s competition on Wednesday evening.
After making a whole host of signings over the summer, Brighton & Hove Albion remain a work-in-progress and head coach Phillips is looking forward to another growth opportunity in the Midlands.
“The Conti Cup games are a good opportunity for us to grow in different ways,” Phillips said when speaking in the pre-match press conference.
“Ultimately, we’re still a newly-formed squad this year with lots to build on and we will continue to look at where we can be more dynamic and where we can be more versatile.
“It is a great opportunity for us to do that and really implement different things that we’ve been working on.”
Opponents Birmingham City have recorded just one win in the Barclays Women’s Championship so far this season but Phillips knows that the Blues have threats that can hurt her side.
She said “Birmingham have loads of quality players in their line-up but for whatever reason they’ve been unable to find their rhythm or a click in terms of results in the first part of the Championship season.
“We know the quality that they have. They are forward-thinking and exciting in their style of play, so we know it will be a competitive match and we will have to manage some of their threats both from open play and set pieces.”
Brighton & Hove Albion’s FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup fixture at Birmingham City kicks-off at 7pm on Wednesday evening.
