“The news on Cristian Romero is not positive, the injury is serious. It is a pity because he is an important player for us, the injury is very serious.

“I don’t know, January, February. But for 2021 he has finished to play. We have to wait and recover well.

“The situation with Gio [Lo Celso] is much better than Romero and my expectation is to see him on Friday. He’s began working and we need to exploit him because he’s a good player.”

On January window

“It’s very far away right now because I need to make the right judgements on my whole squad across many, many games.

“When I became Tottenham manager, I didn’t talk about January or how to improve the team. I’m here because I want to build something important with the club.

“I feel Tottenham is the right club for my ideas and philosophy. I know we’re a bit far from the top clubs so we must work to improve that by creating a good basis to build from.

“It’s not simple but I have great enthusiasm and patience. I believe we can win something important here but we need patience and time because I have the desire to do something great.”

On Steven Bergwijn

“He’s a player with important skills. It was a pity for me, but not his national team, that he played and scored for them because I’d have liked to have him for those two weeks to know him better.

“He has great quality with beating his man, one-on-ones, he’s fast and can score. He can play in any of the front three positions.

“I have to make an important evaluation but I count on him and he is in my squad and available tomorrow.”
