Conor Gallagher’s proposed transfer from Chelsea to Atletico Madrid took a major twist on Monday night that could put the move in jeopardy.
The Blues are eager to offload the midfielder as he enters the final year of his contract and expected to fetch around €40 million (£33m) from selling their academy to help keep them in line with the Premier League‘s Profit and Sustainability Rules.
The England international was poised to join the La Liga outfit this week after flying to the Spanish capital to get the deal over the line.
However, Chelsea have apparently told Gallagher to return to London on Tuesday, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The sudden update comes after Chelsea encountered ‘issues’ in signing Samu Omorodion from Atletico, causing the £33.7 million deal to collapse.
Romano claims that the two moves, as well as Chelsea’s bid to sign Joao Felix, are entirely separate, although that seems unlikely.
Although the Omorodion deal is off the table, the “door remains open” for Gallagher to still complete his transfer to Atletico before the window close at the end of this month.
This also follows on from Valencia sporting director Miguel Angel Corona’s assertion that Atletico tried to cancel the Gallagher transfer. He claims that their preference was to sign Javi Guerra from Los Ches after agreeing a €25m for the 21-year-old midfielder.
