Conor Gallagher explains exactly how he’s stepping up to lead his young squad

Just two years ago, Conor Gallagher was a callow youth, and one we thought might not ever get a real chance at Chelsea.

Now, not only has he started racking up appearances, he’s actually a regular captain. And due to the colossal squad turnover of the last 18 months, he’s somehow one of the most experienced players too.

So how does someone still relatively young and inexperienced by the standards of the league step up and become a leader? Conor explained all in an interview on the Chelsea website:

“We’ve got a very young squad here and I would say I’m probably one of the more senior players now in terms of Premier League experience,” Gallagher explained.

“I’ve tried to be a bit more disciplined and to be more of a leader on the pitch. I’d even say off the pitch as well, to help set a good example at all times.

“You need lots of leaders though, everyone has to play their part. We are a young squad, but we have lots of talented players and we are trying our best to work together and understand each other’s games, which I think you saw against Fulham.”

His passion for the club, and for self improvement, is clear. To think we were trying to flog him on deadline day… to Tottenham of all people. The guy is Chelsea through and though and should be a key member of the squad for years to come. Let’s hope those in the sporting structure above Mauricio Pochettino are coming to realise that.
