Paralyzed in the second round of the group stage, the Copa Libertadores was just another competition affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
Flamengo got off to a beautiful start to their title defence, comfortably handling Atlético Junior 2-1 on the road despite missing several starters before returning to dismantle Barcelona (Ecuador) 3-0.
Flamengo again look really strong and if they make the final for the second year in a row, they will play in front of their home fans as the 2020 final is scheduled to take place at the Maracanã.
However, this will not happen in November, as once planned, marking the third year in a row that the final will not go as originally scheduled.
In an interview with Argentina’s Rádio2, the assistant secretary-general of CONMEBOL, Gonzalo Belloso, revealed that the continental tournament will, for the moment, be concluded in January 2021.
“One of the things we did was to change the calendar, which would allow us to compact a little next year and finish the Libertadores in January next year and also be able to hold the 2021 edition.”
According to CONMEBOL, the competition, as well as the Copa Sudamericana, will only resume once all countries are able to meet the recommended health requirements.
