Conmebol explained why Mexico won’t be participating in next year’s Copa America, which will be their first absence since their first ever appearance in the 1993 edition.
The South American confederation president, Alejandro Domínguez, clarified the confusion surrounding ‘El Tri’s’ absence in Brazil 2019 while speaking at Conmebol’s 69th Ordinary Congress.
“I want to be clear, Conmebol did extend invitations to Mexico and the United Stated through Concacaf, but we never received a reply of any kind,” Domínguez said.
“It’s unknown to us why there was no reply. The organization didn’t have more time to wait, and it was determined that the tournament was to be played with 12 teams.”
The 2019 Copa America will feature Japan and Qatar as guests in the competition. This will be Japan’s second appearance, as they also played in the 1999 edition.
It is believed that Mexico weren’t able to accept the invitation due to conflicting scheduling, as Copa America’s dates will overlap with Concacaf’s premier tournament, the Gold Cup.
