Coventry City have confirmed the signing of young Chelsea full-back Ian Maatsen on a season-long loan.

The teenager spent last season with Charlton Athletic, as the Addicks narrowly missed out on a top-six finish. Maatsen made 34 appearances for the southeast London club, with 31 of them coming from the start.

In that time, Maatsen defined himself as an attacking full-back, netting a goal and providing three more.

The Dutch-born defender spent time at the academies of Feyenoord, Sparta Rotterdam, and PSV Eindhoven, before he made his move to Chelsea in 2018.

Maatsen is yet to make a first-team appearance with The Blues yet but featured regularly for the club’s U23 side in Premier League 2 during the 2019/20 campaign.

Last season, Norwich City’s Sam McCallum embarked on his third spell with The Sky Blues, but with the 20-year-old now with QPR, Maatsen has been given a chance at Championship level.

The verdict

This is an excellent move for all involved. For Coventry, they are getting someone who is likely to provide a similar service to McCallum, who enjoyed an excellent season last time out.

Still only a teenager, Maatsen now has an excellent opportunity to play regular Championship football – something that will keep The Blues happy too.

The young full-back proved to be a real attacking threat with Charlton last season, and his attacking tendencies will be suited to Coventry’s wing-back system.

The Sky Blues will be hoping to establish themselves as a mid-table Championship club this season – an intention that they are growing closer towards achieving with the talent they have brought in this summer.
