Burnley have announced the addition of young midfielder Frankie Deane to their under-21 ranks for the 2022-23 season.

The 17-year-old has joined from Celtic on a one-year professional contract, having previously been reported last month by LancsLive that the young Scot would only be a scholar and be featuring for the under-18’s.

However, Deane will actually be making the step up to the next level and playing with a higher age group, having spent time with the youth team already in the last month.

Deane had a professional contract for the Hoops despite departing the club this summer, and featured for Celtic’s B team in the Scottish Lowland League last season, as well as being a regular with their under-18’s.

The central midfielder will now take the next step in his career with Championship side Clarets, where he will be looking to earn an extended contract before breaking into Vincent Kompany’s first-team setup, and despite his arrival only being officially announced earlier on Monday, he is amongst the substitutes for the club’s under-21’s match with Reading.

The Verdict

It’s not exactly a signing that will get the pulses racing in the sense that Deane is a player who is going to come into the first-team soon and make an impact, but it could be very smart business.

In a Celtic B match back in November, Deane was described as diminutive with intelligent passing and movement – that is something that Burnley fans haven’t seen in their engine room for a while.

There could be a chance that Deane develops incredibly well this year within the under-21 setup and in a couple of years time, he could bloom to become a part of their senior squad.

Some Celtic fans on social media certainly believe that the Clarets have a real talent on their hands though, so he could be the next big thing to emerge at Turf Moor.
