Middlesbrough have confirmed the signing of Aston Villa 20-year-old Aaron Ramsey, who joins on loan for the rest of the 2022/23 campaign.

The attack-minded midfielder joined Boro’s Championship rivals Norwich City on loan in the summer but that spell was cut short due to injury.

Ramsey has now returned to fitness and the North East club has confirmed that he’s joined them for the rest of the season, subject to clearance.

The England U21 international will become the second Villa player to join Boro on loan this month after highly-regarded striker Cameron Archer signed earlier in the winter window.

Ramsey offers something very different from fellow January arrival Dan Barlaser – the deep-lying playmaker that the Teessiders signed permanently from Rotherham United over the weekend.

While Barlaser, Hayden Hackney, and Jonny Howson will share the holding midfield duties, the Villa loanee is likely to be utilised as one of the three attacking players behind the striker in the 4-2-3-1 that Carrick has favoured recently.

He impressed in a similar role at Norwich in the first half of the season – scoring three times and providing three assists in 20 appearances.

The Verdict

This is a fantastic signing for Boro.

Before his injury, Ramsey was one of the better players in the Norwich squad and should provide Carrick with some additional quality.

He was one of the Canaries’ most creative players in the first half of the season and will likely feature either in attacking midfield or off one of the flanks.

Alternatively, his arrival could allow Carrick to shift to three-man central midfield.
