Concerns raised over Thomas Tuchel’s attacking set-up | OneFootball

Thomas Tuchel has clearly been struggling with his attack in recent times, with certain players misfiring and out of form.

But is it all on the players? An article written by Jacob Steinburg of The Guardian yesterday suggests that some of the emphasis is on the system and set-up.

There is no doubt in my mind that all of our attackers have been pretty average for the majority of the time, bar the odd game or two where they do shine. But in general, they have been poor.

I do also have questions about the set-up at times and whether it is working. Steinburg below, makes some interesting points on this.

He suggests that most of the creative emphasis comes from wing-backs in this Tuchel system, and of course, when our best wing-backs were struggling with injuries last season, our whole attack looked very weak.

“Inevitably some of the focus will fall on Tuchel’s approach,” Steinburg writes. “Chelsea’s head coach likes to use a back three, with two midfield sitters guarding the defence, and the system can feel sterile at times.

“Much of the creative emphasis is on the wing‑backs – Tuchel has come to view Chilwell and Reece James as his No 10s – but being a forward in this side does not always look like much fun. At times it looks as if Chelsea are reliant on set pieces, or one of their front three conjuring something special out of nothing, and the spotlight on Tuchel will grow harsher if the goals do not start to flow this season.”

I can’t really disagree with these points to be honest.
