Wrexham have joined the race to sign Callum Doyle from Manchester City this summer.

It has been exclusively revealed by FLW that the Red Dragons are keen on a deal to sign the defender before the window closes.

It was previously reported that the Premier League club are seeking a fee of £10 million to sell the centre-back.

Doyle has spent time on loan with the likes of Sunderland, Leicester City and Norwich City in the past, giving him plenty of Championship experience.

When asked about the pursuit of Doyle, FLW’s Wrexham fan pundit Liam Grice claimed the £10 million asking price may be too much for the club to pay on a defender.

He believes a loan could be great business, even if it came with an obligation to buy clause, praising the impact that he could have on Phil Parkinson’s side.

“I think a deal for £10 million would probably be a bit out of our price range in terms of what we’d be wanting to spend on a centre-back,” Grice told Football League World.

“He has a lot of experience at Championship level, and that’s something we do need to be bringing in.

“I think a loan is a more sensible option for now for us.

“But if City were willing to have that obligation in, I wouldn’t say no to someone of his quality, playing for big sides like Sunderland, like Coventry and Leicester, who’ve all had play-off pushes or promotions in the last couple of years.

“Just shows the kind of quality player he is.

“He’d definitely come in and be one of the best defenders at the club, there’s no doubt in that, it’s just I don’t think for the £10 million price tag it would be a feasible option financially.

“But a loan would make sense.”

Wrexham lost their opening league game 2-1 to Southampton, and will face West Brom at home in their next fixture on 16 August.

Doyle signing would be a big investment by Wrexham

Wrexham have shown a willingness to spend money this summer, but £10 million on a defender would be a big outlay.

The Red Dragons would do very well to win the race to his signature, but a loan deal would be a better option at this moment, even if it did come with an obligation to pay later.

Doyle has a lot of Championship experience already, and has shown he is a very capable player at this level, so he would strengthen the team if he joined.

If they can convince him to join over some of their league rivals, it would be another great statement about the project being built at the Welsh outfit.
