Where will Alexander Nübel go after his loan at VfB Stuttgart ends? While FC Bayern can still envisage Nübel as Neuer’s successor, the Munich club is apparently facing serious competition from Portugal.

Sporting Lisbon, with coach Ruben Amorim at the helm, are said to have their eye on the German goalkeeper. According to a report by Portuguese radio station TSF, Nübel is not only a favoured candidate at Sporting, but also a top transfer target for the coming season.

Amorim particularly appreciates Nübel’s ability on the ball. Sporting, currently top of the Portuguese league, are looking for a long-term solution between the posts in order to be able to compete in the Champions League. The Portuguese club could consider both a permanent deal and a loan.

Clear Bayern plan with Nübel

While speculation about interest from Portugal is intensifying, Bayern are keen to extend the goalkeeper’s contract. Those responsible in Munich are delighted with Nübel’s development in Stuttgart and are already planning the future with him. The talks between Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl and Nübel, which took place before the international break, are said to have been very promising.

Eberl presented the goalkeeper with a clear roadmap for the coming years, which envisages a further loan and subsequent return as a potential successor to Manuel Neuer. Nübel, whose contract in Munich runs until 2025, appears to be open to an extension, but is attaching clear conditions to it. He does not want to continue lining up behind long-serving regular goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

VfB Stuttgart, currently still home to Nübel, are hoping for an extension of the loan. Sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth emphasised the club’s desire to keep the goalkeeper. However, the economic conditions of another loan or even a purchase could pose a challenge.

In the current season, Alexander Nübel has stood between the posts for Stuttgart in 23 games and has impressed with consistently strong performances.
