Manchester United have had a troublesome start to the 2023-24 campaign and we thought we’d check how their record compares to the same stage last season.
There’s still plenty of time for Erik ten Hag to turn things around, but the early signs have been worrying. United currently find themselves eighth in the table and eight points adrift of the top four.
Ten Hag’s side have struggled to find much momentum so far as they have only won back-to-back games once in the Premier League during this campaign.
They have conceded more goals than they have scored and after a humiliating loss in the Manchester derby, they are in desperate need of a change of fortunes.
Gary Neville was less than impressed with United’s performance against their local rivals as he described the performance as a “shambles” as his former side slipped to a 3-0 loss.
“The only claim that Man Utd may have is that the penalty in the first half was maybe a little bit soft, and they may think that’s cost them the game,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“But the second half was all to play for. The first half was half a contest, the second wasn’t a contest at all. Erik ten Hag’s men have been obliterated.
“I didn’t think the substitutions were great, but I have to say the performance of the players in the second half after they went 2-0 down – they lost their discipline in the last 20 minutes. A shambles.”
Luckily for United, they do have some winnable games coming up in the Premier League. Their next three league matches are against Fulham, Luton and Everton who all currently sit in the bottom half of the table.
It’s worth remembering that Ten Hag did have to navigate a difficult start at Old Trafford during his debut season as he lost back-to-back matches against Brighton and Brentford.
Thankfully he soon managed to turn the momentum around and he guided United to a respectable 3rd place finish and he also picked up the Carabao Cup along the way.
Given United’s slow start this season, Ten Hag now faces one of his biggest tests as a manager. As the pressure continues to crank up on the Dutch boss, he will be desperate to turn United’s fortunes around.
We’ve taken a closer look at United’s Premier League record so far and have compared it to their record from the same stage last season.
