West Ham United, Aston Villa and Liverpool are among the Premier League’s most improved sides when you compare their points tallies to the same stage last season.

This time last year West Ham were languishing down in the relegation zone, with David Moyes struggling to integrate his new signings. It was only in the final weeks of the campaign that they dragged themselves to safety.

Fast forward 12 months and there’s a very different mood at the London Stadium. The Hammers have a European trophy under their belt and are riding high up in seventh, just three points off the top four. Lucas Paqueta has settled in, becoming one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders.

There’s also been a dramatic turnaround for Aston Villa, which dates back to the decision to replace Steven Gerrard with Unai Emery last October. The Spanish coach is closing in on a full year in charge of the club, and over that period they’ve produced results worthy of Champions League qualification.

After seven matches last term, Gerrard’s Aston Villa had taken just seven points. They’ve taken over double that after the same amount of games under Emery in 2023-24 and are looking increasingly viable top four contenders by the passing week.

Liverpool are the other club to have most dramatically turned a corner. The 2022-23 campaign was desperately disappointing for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds as they succumbed to an eventual fifth-place finish. The tone was set on in the early weeks with a number of points dropped.

But Liverpool ended last season in solid form and have kept that momentum going into 2023-24. A first league defeat since April Fool’s Day against Tottenham at the weekend still stings for Klopp and his players, but the overall picture is looking much brighter – they’ve picked up six more points than they had at the same stage last year, having registered three more wins.

Somewhat surprisingly, Tottenham have an almost identical record than they had at the same stage last season. Ange Postecoglou’s side have been something of a surprise package with a lightning-fast start, but they had as many points under Antonio Conte – with the same goal difference – after as many games last year.

It’s a similar story for Manchester City, Arsenal, Brighton, Brentford and Wolves – all of whom are within a point or two of the same tally from last term.

At the other end of the scale, Manchester United, Chelsea, Fulham, Bournemouth and Everton are the sides with a markedly worse record.

Here’s how the numbers break down in full for every club:
