Chelsea and Tottenham are two of London’s biggest clubs – but how does their net spend compare over the past five seasons?

Both clubs have invested heavily in the Premier League era to wrestle capital supremacy away from Arsenal but have gone about it in very different ways.

While Chelsea were bankrolled by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich between 2003 and 2022, Spurs have often had to sell their best players in order to strengthen their squad.

And Chelsea’s big-spending habits have continued under new owner Todd Boehly. Having taken charge of the club in May, Boehly has spent big sums on the likes of Raheem Sterling, Marc Cucurella and Kalidou Koulibaly, with more signings expected to arrive at Stamford Bridge before the end of August.

Meanwhile, Spurs have also backed manager Antonio Conte this summer; Richarlison, Yves Bissouma and Ivan Perisic have all moved to north London as they prepare for their first Champions League campaign in three years.

Despite having a smaller budget than Chelsea, Tottenham have broken their transfer record on a regular basis during the Premier League era and, since the move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, have very secure finances.
