World football’s most valuable XI for 2022 has been named and includes various superstars including Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Vinicius Junior.
The total market value of the XI, named by Transfermarkt, is a whopping €1.2 billion.
Other players in the XI include Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and Josko Gvardiol who, like Mbappe, all enhanced their reputations at the recent World Cup in Qatar.
Here’s 2022’s most valuable world XI in full:
A pretty decent team, right?
Every midfielder and attacker is worth at least €100 million.
The defence is probably the weakest aspect of the XI, although Gvardiol, Ruben Dias and Matthijs de Ligt are all fine players in their own right.
Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois, 30, has the highest market value of any goalkeeper in world football right now but is the lowest-valued player in this XI.
As you can see, only two players 10 years ago were valued to be worth in excess of €100 million: Lionel Messi (€120m) and Cristiano Ronaldo (€100m).
Both legends were producing ridiculous numbers in 2012. Messi even set a new world record for most goals (91) in a calendar year.
The defence was arguably far stronger 10 years ago. Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique and Thiago Silva were all undoubtedly world-class back then.
The midfield two of Cesc Fabregas and David Silva was also very strong, as was the forward line of Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero, with Andres Iniesta in the No. 10 position.
The total value of the 2012 XI was €666 million – roughly half of what the current most valuable XI is worth.
Because so many of the 2012 team are now legendary figures, it’s easy to automatically think that XI is far stronger than the current one.
That said, you need to consider that both Messi and Ronaldo were at the peak of their powers back then and virtually unstoppable.
The back three was also more formidable 10 years ago.
But don’t underestimate just how much talent is in the current world XI.
The front seven of Bellingham, Pedri, Phil Foden, Saka, Vinicius Jr, Haaland and Mbappe is ridiculously good.
And there’s every chance that in 10 years’ time we’ll be speaking about many of these players as legends of the game, too.
