European minnows Como 1907 are gaining confidence that they will secure the signing of former Manchester United defender Raphael Varane.

The Frenchman signed for United in 2021 and played three seasons for the club.

It was announced in May that the World Cup winner would not be offered a new contract and he said an emotional goodbye to Old Trafford at the Newcastle United game later that month.

The 31 year old finished his up and down time at Manchester United by putting in an imperious display alongside Lisandro Martinez in the FA Cup victory over Manchester City.

Varane had been linked with a move back to Spain in the form of former club Real Madrid and also Atletico Madrid.

There have also been rumours he may be on his way to the United States of America to team up with numerous fellow former La Liga stars at David Beckham’s Inter Miami.

Nonetheless there is another club that is clearly making the most inroads in convincing Varane to join them. According to reliable Italian sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, “a market dream could turn into reality” as “in these last hours, Como’s confidence in obtaining Varane’s yes is increasing more and more.”

The transfer guru went on to report that “in recent days he (Varane) also met Cesc Fabregas who explained to him the centrality of Como’s project – there are positive signals towards the ‘yes’, which is not yet definitive.”

The Serie A side gained promotion last season back to Italy’s first division and aim to make a statement signing to mark their return.

It has already been reported by Fabrizio Romano that Varane is a “dream target” for the Serie A newcomers.

Whilst fitness issues have plagued the defender, he is still very capable of playing at the highest level, so a move to a team well below the size of club he has become accustomed to representing may raise a few eyebrows.

However, perhaps the 31 year old is prioritising playing time and would without question be the star player and a regular fixture in the defence, playing in one of Europe’s elite leagues.
