Comfortable Bayern win sees gap restored

In a sizzling Sunday clash at Allianz Arena, visitors Frankfurt had their best opportunity of the first half in just the sixth minute when Hugo Ekitike sent a shot narrowly wide of Manuel Neuer's goal after capitalising on a high turnover.

However, in a showing much better than the standard provided by Bayern in recent weeks, the hosts sought to take control of the encounter and were close to taking the lead in the ninth minute when Jamal Musiala sent an effort goalwards that was blocked off the line by Rasmus Kristensen.

With the hosts carrying a zip and energy contrasting that of Tuesday's clash against Celtic, Frankfurt were limited to having to pick their moments to venture forward wisely.

This energy paid off just moments before half time when Michael Olise gave his side the lead in added time.

Leroy Sane flashed the ball across goal, where the Frenchman had the task of volleying the ball into an open net with ease, giving the Bundesliga leaders a well-deserved lead going into half time.

The only negative of the half for the hosts came late on, when Joshua Kimmich was forced off due to injury, being replaced by Leon Goretzka. The substitution of Kimmich saw the German international miss his first minutes of the campaign.

Leroy Sane drove with purpose in the 53rd minute looking to double Bayern's lead. Nnamdi Collins, however, did fantastically to match the run of Sane and divert the eventual effort away for a corner.

Bayern did indeed get their second of the afternoon in the 61st minute thanks to Hiroki Ito, who netted just his third Bundesliga goal, and first in Bayern München colours after joining from VfB Stuttgart in the summer.

Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp failed to deal with a Michael Olise, before the ball bundled off Rasmus Kristensen, falling into the path of Ito, who hammered high into an open net.

With the hosts in firm control, Leroy Sane was close to adding a third in the 77th minute. However, his shot was fired wide from a one-on-one situation against Trapp.

Five minutes later, Jamal Musiala did add a third for Bayern, finding the net with precision after a mazy run through the Frankfurt backline. The young midfielder netted his first goal for the club following his recent contract extension.

In the dying seconds of added time at the end of the match, Serge Gnabry put the icing on the cake for the league leaders, as he nutmegged Trapp after being slipped through by Kingsley Coman.

In a match originally viewed as a potential banana skin, Bayern players were serenaded by the Südkurve, letting out large chants of “Deutscher Fußballmeister” and “Super Bayern.”

In complete control throughout, a win against a fellow top-four side puts the Bavarians well on track to reclaiming the Meisterschale in which they saw ripped from their hands last campaign by Bayer Leverkusen.

Vincent Kompany's men now look ahead to another huge clash, this time in a clash between the giants of the south, when they face VfB Stuttgart at MHPArena on Friday evening.
