AC Milan collected all three points against Bologna last night and when you look at the stats, it’s hard to argue against the fact that it was a deserved win.
Ahead of the Coppa Italia final between the two sides next week, yesterday’s game had been labelled as a ‘preparation clash’ in the media. Few players were rested for Milan, as opposed to Bologna, but the win (and in the way they did it) was important.
Below, we have collected the most interesting stats and facts from the encounter at San Siro. Hopefully, we can see a similar story at Stadio Olimpico.
Although Bologna managed to take the lead, the stats suggest that Milan deserved to come away with all three points in the end. They had three big chances against the Rossoblue’s zero, an xG of 1.63 and more shots on target (albeit just one more).
Furthermore, based on what we saw with our eyes, Bologna’s goal came a bit out of nowhere and thanks to individual brilliance more so than anything. Vincenzo Italiano rested quite a few of the starters so Milan need to be wary of that, but the win was still an important boost.
Milan have become the comeback kings in Serie A with 22 points gained from losing position, 19 of which have been claimed with Conceicao in charge. This is as many points as Liverpool have gained from losing positions as well, while Man City are at 20.
The best in Europe’s top-five leagues are not Milan, though, but rather Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid who have clinched 23 points from losing positions. Still, the Rossoneri’s record is incredibly impressive, even if it would be better not to concede that first goal at all.
The strong season continues for Christian Pulisic. Last night, he managed a goal (the winner) and an assist in the second half. According to Transfermarkt, which counts penalties won as assists, the American is on 17 goals and 12 assists this season.
11 of these goals have come in Serie A, and the figure is the same for assists, which is very impressive indeed. He’s just one goal away from equalling the record of the 2023-24 season, with two games remaining in the league (Roma and Monza).
Rather remarkably, Milan didn’t commit a single foul in the first half of the game, as per the club themselves. This hadn’t happened since September 2023, when the Rossoneri kept themselves in check for the game against Cagliari (also just in the first half).
Of course, there were some fouls in the second half of the game, but the first half was under heavy control by Milan. They also managed to create a couple of good chances and perhaps could have gained the upper hand earlier than they eventually did.
