Fagiano Okayama and Machida Zelvia delivered a close-fought 2-2 draw that reflected both teams’ ongoing adaptation to new signings and tactical setups. The match, played in front of 14,022 supporters, saw Okayama surrender a two-goal advantage in the final quarter, as Machida’s substitutes tipped the momentum late on.
Both sides started with a 3-4-2-1 system, leading to a congested midfield and frequent battles for wide space. Fagiano Okayama, unchanged from their previous win, struck first. Kazunari Ichimi opened the scoring in the 26th minute with support from Ryunosuke Sato. After halftime, Takaya Kimura made it 2-0, finishing a move started by Ryo Tabei.
Until that point, Okayama’s approach looked effective—compact defensively and opportunistic in attack—despite conceding possession to Machida, who finished with 57% of the ball.
Machida Zelvia’s response came via the bench. Coach Go Kuroda introduced Yuki Soma and Mitchell Duke just past the hour. Soma, making his return from injury, scored in the 76th minute after linking with Takuma Nishimura. Just five minutes later, Soma provided the assist for Duke’s equalizer, with Okayama unable to reassert control.
The triple substitution injected energy into Machida’s attack, a contrast to Okayama’s difficulty managing the final exchanges. Both goals involved players either returning from injury (Soma, Nishimura) or newly recruited (Duke, Nishimura), underlining the impact of recent transfer activity.
Machida Zelvia edged possession (58%) and led in shots (13 to Okayama’s 10), as well as expected goals (1.40 to 1.00). Fagiano Okayama managed four shots on target from their nine attempts, converting efficiently but failing to maintain defensive shape once Machida increased the tempo.
Both teams’ 3-4-2-1 setups led to direct transitions and a compact central midfield, but Machida’s deeper squad—bolstered by returnees and new signings—proved decisive in the late stages.
Yuki Soma’s contribution as a substitute (one goal, one assist) changed the outcome. Daihachi Okamura (18/22 duels won, five tackles) anchored Machida’s defense. For Okayama, Takaya Kimura scored and contributed in both phases, while Hijiri Kato provided stability in the back line after joining from Yokohama F. Marinos.
Fagiano Okayama’s lineup continued its blend of established players and newer faces, including Ataru Esaka and Hijiri Kato, both of whom have become regular starters following moves in the last transfer window.
Fagiano Okayama featured forward Gleyson on the bench for the first time in nearly a year after injury, a notable comeback. Locally, the club’s first season in J1 has generated visible enthusiasm, with community events and strong home support helping create a positive atmosphere.
Machida Zelvia marked captain Gen Shoji’s 300th J1 appearance. The club’s “BE HUNGRY FOR VICTORY” campaign underlines their focus on results, especially as they work to rediscover the defensive consistency that defined previous seasons.
Fagiano Okayama remain solid at home, extending their unbeaten stretch at JFE Harenokuni Stadium, though defensive lapses in the closing stages are a concern. Machida Zelvia, now ninth with a 7-3-7 record, showed the character to recover during a period of fluctuating form and key injuries. Recent arrivals and returning players have begun to impact crucial moments.
Both clubs continue their integration of new signings while maintaining competitive positions in a tightly packed J1 League table.
