Coman’s pace and trickery on the wing often left defenders scrambling.
King proved himself to be the provider-in-chief in Bayern’s home game against Werder Bremen when he set up three goals in the 5-0 win. The Frenchman darted past his defender on the right wing with only 10 minutes gone before crossing for Thiago to convert in the middle. He then set up Thomas Müller with a cutback later in the first half. His hat-trick of provisions was complete late on when he again got the better of a defender one-on-one and squared to Thiago to wrap things up. He may not have scored himself that evening, but he was undoubtedly the standout performer.
Coman’s curling effort saw Bayern progress past his former club Juventus in the Champions League.
It was a nail-biting night for all Bayern fans, who had Coman to thank for keeping their Champions League dream alive. The second leg of their round of 16 tie against Juventus had just reached added time when the winger delivered a cross from the right that Müller headed in to take the tie to extra-time. Thiago would then put Bayern ahead after a one-two with Müller before Coman settled things himself with a solo run and curling finish into the top left corner of his parent club’s net as the Bavarians came from 2-0 down to progress to the quarter-finals 4-2 on aggregate.
Coman’s attacking impetus was key for Bayern in Augsburg in 2018/19.
Coman proved once again away at Augsburg in 2018/19 that he’s a player who can always make the difference. Bayern twice went behind in the first half, only for the Frenchman to provide a response each time with an unstoppable volley and then a cool finish between the legs of Gregor Kobel. Coman then assisted FCB to victory by setting up David Alaba in the second half to earn a 3-2 win.
Coman scored on his first start after a lengthy injury layoff.
There were concerned faces all around the Allianz Arena on 11 December 2019 when Coman went over his left ankle against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League group stage. The innocuous injury resulted in 56 days and seven games out of action, but King returned more determined than ever. Handed his first start after recovering on 16 February, he provided a prompt reminder of his importance to the team by scoring the second goal in the 4-1 win at Köln.
Coman explains battling back from injuries:
Coman wrote his name into Bayern folklore later that year with an uncharacteristic – but arguably the most important of his career – goal as he headed in the winner for FCB to beat Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 and lift the Champions League in Lisbon. He rose highest at the far post to meet Joshua Kimmich’s cross and down his boyhood club.
Coman isn’t known for his aerial ability, but it’s a headed goal that he’ll be most remembered for in Munich.
The Parisians had no response in the remaining half an hour before celebrations broke out inside the (crowdless) Estadio da Luz as Bayern secured their sixth European crown as part of their historic sextuple-winning campaign.
Coman scored twice and provided an assist as the Champions League holders began their defence in 2020/21.
The confetti had barely settled on that Champions League triumph before Coman stole the headlines again by scoring two goals and chipping in with an assist as the defending champions kicked off the 2020/21 group stage with a commanding 4-0 win at home to Atletico Madrid. The winger first combined once again with Kimmich, taking down a cross and finding the far corner to open the scoring. He then acrobatically set up Leon Goretzka to double the advantage before the break. Coman wrapped everything up himself with a run from inside his own half, a couple of flicks before finishing with aplomb.
Coman proved during his decade in Munich that he can cause danger from anywhere on the pitch.
Coman’s best Bayern game in terms of goals came at the start of 2022/23 when he scored one and set up three more in the 7-0 thrashing of Bochum in the Bundesliga. He put away the third of the afternoon himself, sandwiched by provisions for Leroy Sané and Sadio Mané inside the first 45 minutes. He then won a penalty in the second half that Mané converted.
A looping effort from Coman helped Bayern to a 3-0 win over Freiburg.
The initial reaction from most viewers to Coman’s goal that opened the scoring in the 3-0 victory at home to Freiburg was the same. Did he mean that? The winger picked up the ball wide on the right and started to drive forward. He wound up for a cross, but the delivery had a bit too much on it. It evaded everyone in the box but dropped kindly onto the far post and into the net. His look of surprise and wide grin suggested that wasn’t exactly what he’d intended. Speaking after the match, he revealed, “It was a cross. I didn’t want to shoot.” Not that it mattered. It put Bayern on course for victory, and that’s all that counts.
