Rennes coach Julian Stephan has stated that Jeremy Doku reminds him of Liverpool forward Sadio Mane.
According to Doku’s father, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp tried to sign his son back in 2018. However, Doku did not end up signing for Liverpool.
Doku was at Anderlecht at the time, but he now plays for Rennes.
Doku’s numbers are nowhere near Mane’s. The Rennes forward has not scored a goal in 19 Ligue 1 appearances this season. However, Doku has registered two assists.
Mane on the other hand has scored seven goals and registered four assists in 22 Premier League appearances this campaign.
However, Stephan sees similarities between Doku and Mane.
Stephan told Walfoot: “I don’t like the game of comparisons but he reminds me of Sadio Mane when he was at Metz.
“He is only 18 years old and he still has a significant margin of improvement in the final third. He is a player with great potential. He is hardworking and applies himself.
“We all see him working to improve.
“You have to have patience with an 18-year-old player who is explosive, who dribbles. If he was already a finished product, in terms of passes and decision-making, he would already be at a top club European.
“We have confidence in him.”
ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT
Doku is only 18, so he is not the finished article. If Klopp wanted to sign Doku back in 2018, then he must be a player with real potential.
Klopp was voted as the world’s best club coach between 2018-2020, so he definitely knows a good player when he sees one.
With that being the case, hopefully Liverpool try to sign Doku in the future. Doku’s current market value is €20 million.
We only expect Doku’s current market value to increase over time, as he is clearly a player with talent going by Stephans’ comments.
