Experienced Serie A Italian coach Luigi De Canio has weighed in on the situation that caused Antonio Conte to step down as Inter boss.

In an interview in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, the Italian tactician stated that he believed there was still enough promise in the Inter squad to have success under Conte going forward, had the Inter manager not decided to part ways with the Nerazzurri.

De Canio has held many positions at Serie A clubs in his lengthy career, most recently at the likes of Genoa, Catania, and Udinese, and understands the mindset of and pressures faced by a top coach.

While De Canio sympathizes with Conte’s position, he also considers that the former Juventus, Italy, and Chelsea boss may have left his work at the club unfinished.

For De Canio, the difficulties at Inter mirror the problems faced by numerous clubs in Italy, and so Inter would still be on a somewhat level playing field.

De Canio remarked:

“Starting from the bottom, I think Conte could have continued to do well. Inter may be in a difficult moment economically, but this situation is shared by many teams.

“The level would have been more or less the same. Evidently Conte had other ideas, however, and it is hard to criticize him for that.”
