As reported by Record, a letter written by Mexico midfielder Héctor Herrera to himself before the World Cup has emerged in the Mexican media after a similar letter by teammate Andrés Guardado also surfaced.

Now departed coach Gerardo Martino had asked all his squad to write to themselves before the tournament congratulating themselves on making the squad as a motivational tactic ahead of the competition. Mexico, however, produced their worst World Cup display since failing to qualify for the 1982 tournament in Spain by missing out on the last 16 for the first time since 1986.

Herrera wrote: “Many congratulations Héctor, for your all your hard work, you gave your best… You should be proud.” Guardado meanwhile attempted to motivate, saying: “Little Prince, I’m writing this letter to congratulate you on your dedication, your professionalism and for making this World Cup. No one knows better than you what it costs to play at a World Cup and, in your case, you will play in a fifth World Cup and leave the National Team having made history. Thank you for teaching me that nothing is impossible.”
