It has not come about in ideal circumstances as an injury wave preceded it, but Sergino Dest will finally get an opportunity to show what he can do from the first minute against Chelsea tomorrow night.

Calciomercato.com report that the injuries sustained by Davide Calabria, Simon Kjaer and Alexis Saelemaekers have weakened Milan’s defence and right flank, so the contribution of the new signing Dest will be fundamental for Pioli, who arrived in the last hours of the summer session to complete the squad.

Pioli is still thinking about the possibility of moving Pierre Kalulu to the right side of the defence and playing Matteo Gabbia alongside Fikayo Tomori, but might also see Fode Ballo-Toure’s performance against Empoli at left-back – during which he scored the winner – as reason to put faith in his ‘reserve’ for the right.

Dest has so far made four appearances across Serie A and the Champions League for a total of 107 minutes, with mixed results including a penalty given away against Napoli for a foul on Kvaratskhelia.

Pioli will have to make virtue out of necessity and the hope is that in Dest he will find supporting actor ready to become the protagonist at a crucial moment.
