CM: Moncada’s mission ignored – Milan left with regret after missing out on Enzo Fernandez | OneFootball

AC Milan might well be feeling some regret after Enzo Fernandez lit up the World Cup stage last night with a second goal against Mexico, a report claims.

Calciomercato.com recall how Lionel Scaloni sent Fernandez onto the pitch and the pace of Argentina changed, resulting in Lionel Messi’s opening goal which eased the pressure and then Enzo himself capped off the win with a gorgeous shot into the top right corner that gave Ochoa in the Mexico goal no chance.

The report adds that the Rossoneri followed Fernandez for a long time while he was at River Plate and there were many positive scouting reports who told the management that he was a player to sign with no ifs, ands or buts.

Geoffrey Moncada had personally gone to Argentina and got Enzo Fernandez’s approval over a move, and yet in the meantime Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara were trying for Renato Sanches, the first choice of the management who courted him and waited for three months.

Benfica swooped and managed to sign Fernandez for €10m plus €8m in bonuses, then Sanches ‘betrayed the pact’ with the Diavolo and gave in to the economic blandishments of PSG.

In the end Milan spent €35m to sign Charles De Ketelaere who is struggling so far and while Fernandez plays a different role, Pioli has shown that he also sees players who are more physical than dynamic in the role of attacking midfielder, with Kessie, Krunic and Aster Vranckx all having played there.

Therefore, Enzo Fernandez could undoubtedly have been an asset for Milan, but now Benfica and Argentina are enjoying the emergence of a midfield jewel.
