The future of AC Milan midfielder Giacomo Bonaventura is at a crossroads now we are beyond the January transfer window, a report claims.

Recently, Calciomercato.com claimed that the 30-year-old’s future at Milan is under serious doubt as a renewal is currently ‘difficult’.

After a resurgence following his return from injury, Bonaventura has been lacklustre in the last few weeks and has rarely seen out the full 90 minutes, struggling with his new position as a left midfielder in Stefano Pioli’s 4-4-2 system.

During an interview with ilmilanista.it last month, Enzo Raiola – the cousin of Bonaventura’s agent Mino Raiola – dropped a bombshell regarding the midfielder’s future by claiming he will leave at the end of the season.

According to the latest update from Calciomercato.com on Tuesday though, Bonaventura is now free to sign with any club, but the former Atalanta star has given priority to Milan.

However, there is still no agreement for the renewal of his contract, nor is there any mention of talks to gauge the possibility of an agreement.

Fiorentina and Roma were credited with interest in Bonaventura just before the January window.
