Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s latest injury has given rise to a rather damning hypothesis: he may have already played his last game for AC Milan.

According to Calciomercato.com (via SempreMilan.it), the recent calf problem suffered during his warm-ups in the second half of the win against Lecce on Sunday seem to be more serious than expected.

The calf – as Mike Maignan found out – is a complicated muscle which means that the new problem, pending more in-depth examinations, could end the Swedish centre-forward’s season prematurely and perhaps even his career as a player.

At the age of 41 Ibrahimovic will now have to decide whether to overcome this problem and carry on playing or whether his body is in fact telling him to permanently hang up his boots.

The source claims that Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara would not be against another one-year renewal but with an even lower salary than the €1.5m net currently received.

However, he would have a more marginal and practically an ex-player role that would nevertheless allow him to train alongside his younger team-mates and act almost as an assistant to Stefano Pioli.

This idea does not particularly excite Ibrahimovic, who still feels like a player in his heart and that is why a return to the Swedish league is also an option that is starting to gain ground, potentially at Hammarby whom he owns a stake in.
