Club Brugge suffered 0-2 defeat against Westerlo

On matchday 11 of the Jupiler Pro League, Blauw-Zwart hosted KVC Westerlo at home. Both teams failed to find the back of the net in the first half, but it was Westerlo that bagged the three points with a Foster double after the break.

After Tuesday's fantastic win against Atletico Madrid, coach Hoefkens felt it was important to make some changes for the match against KVC Westerlo. Among others, Jutglà, Sowah and Sylla were not in the squad. As such, we again saw Spileers, Lang and Yaremchuk in the starting line-up. In addition, Mata, Skov Olsen and Sobol were also given the confidence to start. For the visitors, the most notable name in the starting line-up was De Cuyper, given his past at Club. Van Den Keybus and Dierckx started on the bench.

The match started fairly evenly, but it was Club that immediately claimed the ball with a good opportunity for Lang after five minutes. Nielsen won the ball high on the pitch and played it to Lang, but his effort was cleared on the line.

Blauw-Zwart continued to attack and Nielsen cut himself free just outside the penalty area. However, his shot was too central and not hard enough to threaten Bolat. The visitors' goalkeeper was the only one who had work to do in the opening quarter, as he also had to intervene when Yaremchuk was sent deep. After fifteen minutes play, Club's best chance fell: Skov Olsen pushed forward well and was able to put the ball in front of goal. Yaremchuk again hit Bolat and in the rebound Vanaken placed the ball over the crossbar from just two meters out. On the other hand, Westerlo could threaten once through Foster, but his header on Akbunar's cross went wide.

Westerlo tried to restore the balance, but it was Club that dictated the pace of the game. After a swift attacking combination, Lang found Nielsen with a backheel but the Dane saw his shot take a deflection before it went wide.

On the half-hour mark, Westerlo carved out their best chance so far. Foster headed the ball back to Chadli, who blasted the ball just wide of the target. Club responded immediately with a Nielsen free-kick that didn't find anybody in front of goal and nearly went in. A few moments later Skov Olsen played the ball to Onyedika who sent Yaremchuk through on goal, but the Ukrainian sent the ball just wide of the far corner.

Just before the half-time whistle Mignolet was forced into making a save on an effort by De Cuyper and Akbunar found Mignolet on his path as well.

No changes at the break and the same story with Club looking for the opening goal. But it was Westerlo that broke the deadlock. Nene took advantage from a slip in Club's defence and was through on goal. Mignolet saved his effort, but Foster netted the rebound. The visitors could now hurt Blauw-Zwart on the break. Reynolds whipped in a good cross for Chadli, who headed the ball via Mata wide of Mignolet's goal.

Coach Hoefkens tried to turn things around by bringing on Nusa and Buchanan. The Canadian almost immediately tried to level the score, but his shot was too central to beat Bolat.

Westerlo focussed mostly on their defensive duties now, while Club was pushing for the equaliser. Bolat parried away Vanaken's shot and then tipped Skov Olsen's effort from underneath the crossbar. In the 80th minute Spileers rose highest to meet with a corner kick, but his header was too tame to beat Bolat.

Substitute Larin latched onto a Vanaken through ball and tried to beat Bolat with a chip, but the ball hobbled wide. While Club couldn't find a break-through, it was Westerlo that sealed the deal in the closing minutes. A free-kick was cleared but fell into the feet of Foster who tapped in his second of the evening from closeby.
