Club América eased the pressure on manager Fernando Ortiz thanks to a convincing win over rivals Pumas in the Clásico Capitalino.
Scorers: Valdés 38′, Rodríguez 57′, Zendejas77′
Las Águilas struck the first blow, taking the lead in the 38th minute. Henry Martín was slipped through on goal following an amazing run by Richard Sánchez but the Chilean’s clipped effort came back off the crossbar to Diego Valdés who cooly slotted home.
Pumas would need a phenomenal save from goalkeeper Julio Gonzalez to deny Jonathan Rodríguez from six yards out. The Uruguayan winger collected Valdés’ cushioned header and, on the half-volley, put as firm strike on target.
Gonzalez, however, was on hand to expertly deny Rodríguez, diverting the ball around his post with a firm left hand.
Rodríguez would have better luck in the second half though as he doubled the visitor’s lead and put the game beyond Pumas just before the hour mark before, in the 77th minute Alejandro Zendejas put the game to bed.
