Club América secured their place in the next round of the Liga MX Apertura post season thrashing Puebla 5-1 on Saturday evening.
Scorers: Rodríguez 21′, Martín 27′, Martínez 51′, Fidalgo 61′, Layun 85′; Araújo 36′
Brian Rodríguez gave the hosts an early lead, effectively putting the tie to bed as he increased the aggregate score to 7-1. Some swift interplay culminated with Roger Martínez feeding Rodríguez who finished from a tight angle.
América doubled their lead before the half-hour mark in clinical fashion as Henry Martín played a neat give-and-go with Martínez, picking up his second assist of the evening, before cooly slotting the ball under the onrushing keeper.
Puebla would pull one back before half-time as Maximiliano Araújo capitalised on a dreadful defensive error before delightfully chipping the ball over Guillermo Ochoa and off the underside of the crossbar.
Martínez then turned goal scorer with the pick of the bunch. Rodríguez laid the ball off to the Colombian who took one touch before unleashing a powerful strike from well outside of the box to restore the two-goal advantage on the night.
Second-half substitute Álvaro Fidalgo added a fourth on the night when, benefitting from a lucky deflection, the 25-year-old burst into Puebla’s penalty area before keeping his composure to find the bottom corner.
Jürgen Damm had a goal ruled out for offside after a VAR consultation before Miguel Layún got in on the act, rounding off the route with an 85th-minute penalty as Fernando Ortíz’s side progressed through to the Liga MX Apertura semi-finals with an aggregate score of 11-3.
