Club América pulled off a vintage comeback on Wednesday night, coming back from two goals down late to draw Santos Laguna 3-3 at the Estadio Azteca.
Scorers: Martín 9′, Rodríguez 88′ (og), Viñas 90+7′; Suárez 8′, 17′, Preciado 64′
With the rescued point, América stay atop the Liga MX table, albeit now by just one point over Rayados.
Even though the Eagles would attempt 29 shots on the night, it was Leo Suárez who kicked off the six-goal thriller in the eighth minute, cutting inside from the right and smashing the ball home in the bottom left corner to give Santos the lead.
From the ensuing kickoff, Henry Martín would pounce on a rebound to level the score about 60 seconds later.
Not to be outdone, Suárez would complete his brace in the 17th minute, again cutting inside from the right and firing a shot that took a big deflection before finding the bottom corner.
The match was full of attacking highlights and either team could have legitimately put six goals on the scoresheet. However, neither team would find the net until the 64th minute, when Harold Preciado would finish off a counterattack by slotting home a rebound to put Santos up 3-1.
It looked as if Santos had secured the three points late but an Eagles cross would take an unlucky deflection off Hugo Rodriguez and into the Santos goal.
América would have numerous chances to draw level but on virtually the last kick of the match, Álvaro Fidalgo whipped in a cross from distance that perfectly found the head of a lunging Federico Viñas, who thumped the ball past a helpless Carlos Acevedo to send the Azteca into a frenzy.
