The Campeones Cup is a showpiece event involving the reigning MLS and Liga MX champions which has been running since 2018.
Across the last five editions of the event (excluding 2020, when the final was cancelled due to the impact of COVID-19), teams from the MLS have come out on top on three occasions, as opposed to the two victories for Liga MX sides. In fact, the only side that has won the competition twice is Tigres UANL. A team that won the inaugural rendition in 2018 and last year when they defeated Los Angeles FC via a penalty shootout.
Both of this season's finalists have participated in this event before, displaying opposite outcomes. During the 2019 final, Club América faced Atlanta United at their Mercedes-Benz stadium where they would narrowly defeat the Mexican side 3-2. Two years later, in 2021, the Columbus Crew faced Cruz Azul in the final to become the second MLS side to lift the trophy, beating La Maquiná 2-0.
The other winner of this event was New York City FC, who defeated Guadalajara-based Atlas in the 2022 final.
This season, the Columbus Crew not only come into the final as the reigning MLS champions, but they were also crowned winners of the Leagues Cup last month after beating LAFC 3-1 in the final.
As for Las Águilas, who were winners of the 2023 Liga MX Apertura, along with the 2024 Clausura, they will be searching for confidence from this showpiece final as they find themselves in 10th place, after recording four wins from the opening nine league matches.
The sixth edition of the Campeones Cup will be held at the Lower.com Field in Columbus, Ohio at 17:30 CET.
