After starting out the season dead bottom of Liga MX, América have pulled off one of the more impressive feats in recent memory, going from play-off outsiders to having a chance to directly qualify for the Liguilla.

Though Eagles supporters are red-hot and believe they have a great chance to win the title, owner Emilio Azcárraga is less than impressed.

“I understand that there can be bad or good streaks, but in the end, América cannot depend on streaks. We must always set the bar very high,” he exclaimed to TUDN.

“América should always be champions, obviously being in 18th place was not the place where we should be.

“We have never aspired to make the play-offs, we have always aspired for more. However, it was the reality that had to be accepted at the time.

“Today we are one game away from making the Liguilla directly and the team is very united. They understood the responsibility they have with the fans and we must win. That’s what it’s all about, football is a drama.”

América will take on Cruz Azul and will need a win and one of either Atlas or Puebla to fail to win in order to reach the top-four.

Interestingly, if Atlas and Puebla both lose, the Eagles will only need a draw to advance and finish third.
