Fabián Doman, president of Argentine club Independiente, has said Club América are going “down a strange and wrong path” after the Liga MX side petitioned FIFA to punish his club with a points deduction amid a transfer dispute.

As reported by Mexican outlet, Record, the spat between the two clubs dates back to 2019 and the transfer of Paraguayan forward Cecilio Domínguez from América to Independiente. The Liga MX side, however, say they are yet to receive the €5.3m transfer fee in full and have enlisted the authorities to settle the matter.

FIFA however stated that Independiente still had time to pay the fee and would not be imposing any sort of sporting punishment on the club in this case. Doman, also a television personality in Argentina, said he “celebrated” the ruling and that any such punishment would have been “strange… we now can give the fans the good news, the ones who have supported Independiente during these months.”

Domínguez, a 28-year-old Paraguayan international, played just 42 games for the Argentine side before moving to the MLS with Austin and back to his homeland with Guaraní before returning to Mexico, where he currently plays for Santos Laguna.
