When speaking to the press about his decision to leave Mexico for the Netherlands, Sánchez admitted linking up again with national team-mate Edson Álvarez was key.

“It is partly thanks to him that I am here”, he said. “He has made me grow, both on and off the field.”

“In the Mexican squad, we share a room. And if that doesn’t happen, we’ll make sure we’re together anyway. Edson is very important to me in both my career and my life. It’s a genuine friendship, where everyone hopes for in his life.

“I am very happy to be at Ajax now, at such a big club. I am going to fight for my place and fight with my teammates.”

During his time with América, Sánchez registered two goals and eight assists in 150 matches.

He will now wear number 19 for Ajax.
