Club América defender Miguel Layún has opened up about the differences between Liga MX and Major League Soccer in the wake of the Mexican national team’s disappointing showing at the World Cup.
The 34-year-old believes MLS has done more to grow the league in the eye of global football and is beginning to break away from Liga MX, which once dominated Central and North America.
“The planning that a league like the MLS has had, which first was able to bring in figures from the international level to capture attention, really amazes me,” Layún told TUDN.
“When I was in England, a television channel had a summary of the MLS matchday, showing the clubs and players, allowing fans to become familiar with the league.
“As well as already having good coaches, they were grabbing them from other leagues, including Matías Almeyda, Bruce Arena, De Boer in Atlanta.
“In case we haven’t noticed, the are a number of (American) players who have gone to Europe for affordable fees.”
With the World Cup winding down, Layún will have to shift his focus back home, as América find themselves less than 48 hours out from a Copa por México showdown with Necaxa.
