On Wednesday, Club América advanced past very testy Honduran side Olimpia, losing 1-0 on the night but moving on to the Concacaf Champions League quarter-finals by virtue of away goals.
However, the Mexican giants did not escape unscathed.
Around the hour-mark, Jesús ‘Chucho’ López was forced to be stretchered off after suffering a leg injury after being on the wrong end of a Justin Arboleda tackle.
The player left the stadium directly to the hospital to assess the severity of his injury.
In a statement released on Thursday, América confirmed that López indeed suffered a serious leg injury: a fractured fibula that will require surgical intervention.
In addition, América has informed the public that it will ask Concacaf to suspend Arboleda for ‘violent conduct’.
