Without displaying any spectacular football, América were able to comfortably beat Pumas UNAM 2-1 in the second leg of the quarter-final tie to advance to the semi-finals with a crushing 6-2 aggregate score.

The Águilas came out rampant to kill any Pumas comeback-hopes, and rapidly found a goal through Mateus Uribe.

Pumas chances faded away even more when two of their players were sent off. ‘El Chelo’ Diaz saw the red card on the 20th minute, while striker Nico Castillo was ejected in the 70th minute.

The only spark of hope for UNAM’s side came before half-time, as Jesús Gallardo equalised.

There was little action in either of the boxes in the second half, however Agustín Marchesín still had to come up with a big save to deny Pumas from winning the ‘Clásico Capitalino’ at Azteca Stadium.

And with just ten minutes left, Andrés Ibargüen scored to seal the ticket to the semi-finals.
