French referee Clément Turpin has been tasked by UEFA to oversee the anticipated Champions League R016 first leg between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid on Tuesday, UEFA has announced. Carlo Ancelotti’s Champions League winners qualified for the R016 in eliminating Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the previous round. They have drawn their Madrid rivals for a rematch of the 2014 and 2016 Champions League finals. Such an appointment reinforces Turpin’s status as one of the most trusted referees in the game. Jérôme Brisard and Willy Delajod will act as VAR and assistant VAR on Tuesday.

The 42-year-old has already overseen eight Champions League games involving Real Madrid – including the 2022 final against Liverpool FC at Saint-Denis’ Stade de France (1-0) – the last of which was this season’s tie against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. Real Madrid have never lost a Champions League game with Turpin as the referee.
