The Dujon Sterling story at Rangers has certainly been a curious one, with his getting no minutes early last season before then-new manager Philippe Clement put him straight into the first team.
This past two months have seen a change, with the midfielder signing a new contract and then disappearing from the first team almost entirely, and Clement has sought to finally, and apparently definitively clarify what’s going on with the ex-Chelsea man.
He said:
“I’m not sure that he’s ready now for 90 minutes in games so that he needs to prove the next weeks. He’s been struggling two months with not a big injury but something that stopped him off really sprinting, really being his normal self like he was last season. Because of that he didn’t have the level he had before and that’s why he played less minutes.”
The last time Sterling started was late last month.
Clement went on:
“So finally with the medical staff we found the solution, how to solve it, it’s solved now, he feels better and that’s why he played better also. So it’s normal that he will get more minutes if he plays better and those are the rules in football in the squad. It’s about proving yourself in the trainings and in the games when you come in that you’re ready so I hope we get back the Dujon we saw last season.”
Very curious how Sterling receives this scrutiny but other players, underperforming, get nothing like it from the manager.
He finished:
“In the beginning of the season he almost didn’t play and I was surprised when I came in the first weeks that he didn’t play because of what I saw, and after he played a lot of minutes so we hope to see that Dujon again.”
Clement’s (English) language and communication are clearly not terribly good – the Belgian is trying to say Sterling had a niggling injury the past two months, stopping him being at his best, and now he has to prove his fitness.
This seems fair enough, but the moment Oscar Cortes was fit again he was thrown straight into the deep end, no questions asked – James Tavernier’s form has been far from great but he’s never accountable.
We guess we’ll just see now if Sterling finally breaks back into Rangers’ first team under this manager.
