Lazio president Claudio Lotito has defined the club’s transfer strategy for the summer, and it includes keeping five key stars.
The Biancocelesti were dealt a massive sporting and financial blow, as they failed to qualify for any European competition next season. Therefore, many fans fear the club will be forced to downsize the project by cashing in on some of their biggest assets. However, Lotito has other plans, as revealed in his interview with Il Messaggero (via La Lazio Siamo Noi).
The patron admits that the Aquile must trim their squad, as it’s currently too large for a club playing once a week. However, the 68-year-old insists that the exodus won’t include first-choice striker Taty Castellanos, midfield duo Matteo Guendouzi and Nicolo Rovella, rising winger Gustav Isaksen, or Nuno Tavares.
At this moment there is no need to buy. Rather, there is the opposite technical problem: we have to sell because there are too many surplus players for just one competition plus the Coppa Italia. We are talking about twenty eight players. I’m not selling anyone else (aside from the redundacies like Fares, Basic, Cancellieri and Cataldi). We have great players and that’s proven by the fact that everyone is asking for them. I said no to major offers for Rovella, Tavares, Isaksen, Guendouzi and Castellanos.
Lotito also explained that he brought back Maurizio Sarri because he believes he can maximize the potential of Lazio players, similar to Antonio Conte at Napoli.
The team is there. Have you seen what Conte did in Naples? I took Sarri to make everyone perform at their best. The coach will evaluate the entire squad in pre-season. If he doesn’t like someone, he will be sold and a replacement will arrive.
