In the end, Manchester United star Marcus Rashford showed he is as much a hero on the pitch as he is off it
It was an indictment in the faces of all those who felt he should be focussing his efforts on the field than off it.
Starting on the bench, Rashford came on in the 63rd minute for United. It was all he needed to bag his first ever hat-trick for the club.
Moreover, the effort is also the fastest hat-trick scored by a player in the competition’s history. Given the illustrious names that have graced it over the years, it is quite an achievement.
Rashford also joins an elite list of players who have come off the bench to score a treble in Europe’s top competition. The others are Kylian Mbappe, Walter Pandiani, Joseba Llorente and Uwe Rosler.
He also becomes the first United player since manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to score a hattrick for United off the bench. The boss managed the feat versus Nottingham Forest in February 1999.
The win takes us to six points having played two of the biggest rivals in the group. United will now be expected to get through what has been the group of death.
We take a look at how fans reacted to yet another Rashford masterclass.
