Despite the banning order preventing Olympique de Marseille fans from travelling to the Stade de la Mosson, some supporters still made the journey to witness their side defeat local rivals Montpellier HSC 5-0.
L’Équipe writes that incidents between rival fans broke out across the stadium after each of the five goals. The French paper also writes that there were scenes of families trying to escape the clashes by entering the closed-off stands in the upper tiers of the Mosson.
In the stadium, Marseille fans attempted to congregate towards one another during the halftime break and near the end of the game. And a small pocket of the away fans could be heard particularly in the latter parts of the game when cheers of olé sounded out as Marseille controlled the ball.
The Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retaillea, had harsh words for the evening’s display on his social media, “Unjustifiable violence has once again tarnished the image of football.”
