Clash win for Club against Genk 3-1

Club Brugge has bent the home league game against KRC Genk to its will, making it a firm 3-1 win. Vanaken tapped in the opener minutes into the game, only to see Ito restoring the balance just before half time. After the break, De Ketelaere and Adamyan made sure the points went Club's way in a win that takes Club back to five points from leaders Union.

The team that had sent KV Ostend packing last week again manned the pitch. The visitors started out with a five man defense, looking to set up camp in a tight organisation, but those plans were soon ripped to shreds. Blue and Black took a fiery start, and the first real threat proved golden. Mats Rits struck from outside the box, and the effort was deviated past Vandevoordt to make it an early 1-0.

The navel-gazing was soon over for Genk, pushing its wing backs more upfield, and trying to react after that early setback, but unable to ask Club any questions. A wild shot by Arteaga went high over, and Thorstvedt was also unable to frame his attempt. Ball loss by Mechele also turned out to be harmless.

Smooth sailing for Club, it seemed, but with five minutes to go in the first half, Ito started swerving just outside the box and neatly put the ball out of reach of Mignolet, stretching unsuccessfully to keep out the equaliser. The goal caused a flurry in Club's play: Adamyan cut inside but aimed straight at Vandevoordt. Moments later, Buchanan's effort sailed over.

A fiesty Club kept going for that second goal in the second half, and a great Skov Olsen cross was just not met by Adamyan. But the same situation repeated itself in the second half; Mata was neatly picked out on the right wing, went for the goal line and produced a perfect cross for Charles De Ketelaere to head in the 2-1 straight into the second half.

Another setback for the visiting side, conceding another blow shortly after the hour mark as Sadick was sent off as he brought down Rits on his way to goal with a harsh tackle. An eager Genk kept trying, however, and after a swift break, four Genk players faced two Club defenders and Simon Mignolet. Paintsil was found in front of goal, but Mata came back just in time to block Paintsil's shot. A Lucumi header was then easily grabbed by Mignolet, but the best chance was for Ito, firing his effort just above the crossbar from close range after some fancy footwork by the Japanese player.

It remained a tight game, until Sargis Adamyan put the result beyond doubt after a scrimmage in front of goal, first seeing his shot blocked by Lucumi, but in his second attempt, he fired the ball in by the far corner. Game over for Genk, and more accuracy by Rits, Lang and Buchanan could have lifted the score to 4-1. A graceful win for Club, taking the team back to five points from league leaders Union.
