City’s hunt for a striker reportedly sees a Brighton striker land in their crosshairs

As it stands the only area that looks to need strengthening in the Manchester City squad is bringing in another striker to provide cover for Erling Haaland. With Julian Alvarez having left the champions for Atletico Madrid that appears to be the only area of concern in City’s squad.

The current transfer window will close at 23:00 (UK time) on August 30. Time is running out for City to find the ideal player to fill the role. A new report has indicated that Manchester City have an interest in signing Brighton striker Evan Ferguson. But that move appears to be a long shot on closer inspection.

Steve Kay has reported for footballtransfers.com that Manchester City have an interest in signing Evan Ferguson from Brighton. Kay further reports that Manchester City could face competition from Brentford and Arsenal if they move to sign Ferguson. Furthermore, Kay reports that Brighton could demand a transfer fee of £70 million if they are to sell the young striker. Lastly, Kay reports that Manchester City and Arsenal would be keen on signing Ferguson on loan and would hope to negotiate a transfer fee for Ferguson with Brighton next summer.

A Manchester City move for Evan Ferguson looks to be a long shot despite his talent and potential.

As a player, Evan Ferguson is a promising young striker. His mixture of power and finishing ability makes him one of the brightest young prospects in the Premier League. Since bursting onto the scene at Brighton he has scored 16 goals in 65 appearances for the Seagulls. Unfortunately for Ferguson injuries have slowed the development of the young striker. He hasn’t played since March due to an ankle injury. But at 19 years of age and when he is fully fit he is one the brightest young talents in the Premier League.

As per Steve Kay’s report, a loan move for Ferguson would make sense for Manchester City. The problem is it doesn’t seem to be a realistic option this summer. Ferguson’s recent injury issues could be one factor that hampers any potential move from Manchester City for the talented young striker. As tantalising a prospect as Ferguson is, it doesn’t seem that a City move for the Irish international is imminent. He plays a role that Manchester City need to fill, but nothing indicates that the champions have Ferguson in their sights. They do appear to be in the market for a more experienced attacking player to add to Pep Guardiola’s squad.

Evan Ferguson is a talented prospect, but as previously mentioned, his ankle injury seems to be too big a risk for Manchester City to take on. It would be counterproductive for City to sign a player who is currently coming off a long-term injury. The champions need a player who can contribute now. Ferguson doesn’t appear ready to do that just that.

On closer inspection it doesn’t seem that a Manchester City move for Evan Ferguson is a realistic option. If City do bring in a striker this week it looks like it would be another player. They could move for Evan Ferguson in the future but it doesn’t appear to be a likely move this summer.
