Manchester City’s boy wonder and a Manchester City legend are beginning to form a lethal partnership. Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne were both at their best during City’s 3-1 win over FC Copenhagen overnight. They helped Pep Guardiola’s side take control of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie at the Parken Stadium. The first-leg win for City has laid the foundation for the second leg of the tie at the Etihad Stadium.

As the game progressed it was clear to see that two of Manchester City’s most important players are beginning to form a lethal partnership together. Foden and De Bruyne were both on the scoresheet and provided goals for one another during Pep Guardiola’s side’s dominant performance. They wreaked havoc over 90 minutes as they helped City to a vital win.

Their combination play during City’s win that was a highlight of the night. It is clear that the pair have struck up an understanding on the pitch and it was to Pep Guardiola’s side’s benefit last night. If it continues it will be to Manchester City’s benefit and become another weapon for City’s rivals to fear.

The pair are both at opposite ends of their careers and Phil Foden does appear to be the champion’s long-term replacement for De Bruyne. But with De Bruyne continuing to put in dazzling displays their combination could continue to torment City’s opponents for some time yet.

Speaking post game Manchester City’s boy wonder spoke of the connection he and Kevin De Bruyne had built. Phil Foden told the media: “Me and Kev have built that connection now. When he makes that run I know the right time to play the pass.”

Foden spoke of how important it is for Manchester City to have De Bruyne back on the pitch. He added: “Now it comes natural to us. It’s important to have Kev back because he’s such an important player for us. I think Kev notices the right time to make the movement and it makes my job easier for me. For me there’s no better player in the world at passing the ball. He’s just a pleasure to play with and is so important for us.”

At some point in the future Kevin De Bruyne will pass the torch to Phil Foden. But for now City’s boy wonder and the Manchester City legend are forming a devastating combination on the pitch. Their partnership could lead the world champions to even more success if their performance against FC Copenhagen becomes the norm for the prodigiously talented pair.
